The NBA season just ended, and it seemed like just yesterday anyone in San Antonio, and everyone else outside of Miami, was rooting against LeBron James and the Miami Heat, and the team’s quest for their 3rd straight NBA Title. Now, even after the season is donezo, it seems that the NBA is still all anyone can talk about. Or moreso, the superstars of the NBA and what moves they’re making and what team they’ll be playing for next year.
So, your guy is super into the whole free agency period and you really could just care less. Unfortunately, that doesn’t make it any easier to deal with. But, lucky for you, here’s all the info you need to get by: who to know, what their deal is, and basically, as the title states, wtf is going on.
Carmelo Anthony is the talk of the town really when it comes to free agent superstars and he’s soaking it up. Carmelo and his team have been hitting the skies traveling across the country, meeting with teams who are trying to court him to come play for them. And these teams are pulling out all the stops: giant pictures of him on the outside of their arenas, dressed in one of their team’s jerseys, bringing in other players on the team to the meeting, or going beyond that and bringing in retired superstars like the Chicago Bulls did (they brought in former NBA Champion Scottie Pippen). Basically, teams are doing whatever it takes, promising Carmelo that he’s the key to their championship dreams, and doing everything but getting on one knee and proposing, although, we don’t have confirmation that that part isn’t happening. Melo is currently located in New York with his family, wife LaLa Vasquez and their kids. Rumor has it that Melo doesn’t really want to leave New York, and will only do so if the deal is absolutely the perfect fit. Guess no one ever told him that nothing is ever perfect. Being the fact that the New York Knicks are 1 of only 2 teams that appear to be willing to offer Melo a max contract, they may not be looking for a moving company quite yet.
LeBron James is a huge talk of this free agency too, although he just started officially taking meetings with other teams so its hard to get a full grasp on what on earth he’s doing. For one thing, James originally opted out of his contract with the Miami Heat, as did the team’s other 2 big guys, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh, and the thought that they would all be taking less money in an effort to bring another major player to Miami, to get back on their championship winning ways. Then, LeBron dropped the bomb, that he’s looking to get the maximum amount of money he can, which effectively puts a giant wrench in things when it comes to the “Big 3’s” initial plan. As last reported, LeBron’s agent is talking things over with the Houston Rockets, the Phoenix Suns, the Dallas Mavericks, the Cleveland Cavaliers, and the Los Angeles Lakers. And again, its important to note that many people don’t think he’ll be going anywhere and will keep his fancy cars parked in Miami. But, the list of teams that he’s meeting with continues to grow, so those people could be getting further and further away from being right. Especially with new reports brewing that LeBron really, really, really wants to go back to Cleveland, his hometown, the place where he still has a home and where, its important to remember, he ran away from 4 years ago to head to Miami. Its a soap opera if there ever was one.
And then you’ve got a few other big names being thrown around that are important players too, many just not as important as landing someone like Melo or LeBron. There’s Pau Gasol, the Los Angeles Lakers player who is possibly looking to trade teams, and is currently in talks with the Oklahoma City Thunder, Chicago Bulls, and even possibly the New York Knicks. Then you’ve got Chris Bosh, 1/3 of Miami’s Big 3, who is allegedly chatting it up with the Houston Rockets. It appears that the only person staying 100% completely true to the Miami Heat right now is Dwayne Wade, although before he opted of out of his contract, they owed him more than $20M, so we can see why. There’s Kevin Love, the guy that seemed to get this whole “looking for a new team thing” started, but to this point, still has not found a home.
The way I see it, and the way it truly appears to be, is that one of these big guys is going to sign somewhere, and everything else is going to fall like dominoes. Its sort of like in Battleship where you circle your opponent, and you keep circling, until you are 120% sure where a part of their boat is. Then, you fire. One of these players is essentially the ship, and as soon as its gone, teams are going to be clinging to the other free agents, hanging on for dear life.
